Farm Building Identification and Location

The Estate name is the name of the farm to which the fields listed belonged and which could be spread over 2 or more parishes. Estates usually included a farmhouse and/or barn/s and cottage/s. Where possible the farmhouse has been identified as well as other significant buildings.

Estate and associated farmhouse names may have been different prior to and/or after those of 1843. Often a farm and/or farmhouse took the name of a current owner and that name was sometimes retained when the farm changed ownership.

Some farmhouses and farm buildings have been converted to homes and for other purposes.

Many estates, fields, farms, farmhouses, farm buildings and industrial units such as Tuckenhay Paper Mill, were omitted from the Tithe Map and Apportionment as they were not liable for tithe and therefore details were not part of the commutation process.

Since 1843 many parish boundaries have been revised. This has affected fields in Cornworthy but not farmshouses. Tuckenhay Paper Mill and many neighbouring field were transferred to Ashprington after a major boundary change in the 1980s

The modern Hunter's Lodge Inn, formerly The Globe Inn, is not marked on the Tithe Map, The New Inn is shown on the opposite side of the road on a site occupied by four the four cottages listed below. This indicates that the site, and all others on the N of the road and E of Berries, were not liable for tithe.

Of the three houses on the Tithe Map leased by John Shillaber on the L of the lane NE from East Cornworthy only the walls of the middle house remain in the grounds of The Round House (as of 2025). Those of Holditchs on the R of lane have gone to be replaced by modern sheds and barns collectively called The Granary (as of 2025). Only the barn further up the lane on the R survives, now a house called Rivendale Farm (as of 2025)
